West Hartford Comprehensive Energy Plan

In December 2008, the Town Council requested the West Hartford Clean Energy Task Force to "develop a comprehensive energy plan by March 1, 2009 for the Town's buildings, lighting, and vehicle fleet" and to "identify opportunities for (i) energy mitigation through improved efficiencies and a culture of conservation and (ii) the increased use of clean and renewable energy sources."

In March 2009, the Town Council adopted the West Hartford Comprehensive Energy Plan. This plan aims to steer the municipality (including schools) toward clean energy and energy efficiency through both changes in technologies and through individual action and education. It does not address opportunities to further clean energy among town residents or businesses. The Clean Energy Task Force hopes to expand the plan in the near future to cover this.

Three (3) broad commitments serve as the foundation for the West Hartford Comprehensive Energy Plan. The town has started to track the progress that it is making towards these goals.

  1. Connecticut Clean Energy Communities. Goal: Purchase 20% of electricity from clean energy sources by 2010, 30% by 2015
  2. U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Goal: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions 7% below 1990 levels
  3. EPA Community Energy Challenge. Goal: Reduce energy consumption by 10%
