iCanBike

The Miracle League of Connecticut is handling administration and registration for iCan Bike going forward. Please visit their website to get updated information about camp dates, registration, volunteering etc. Here are a few details (including 2016 camp dates) from the Miracle League website:

WHAT IS iCAN BIKE?

iCan Bike uses adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program, and trained staff to enable individuals with disabilities to learn to ride a two wheel bicycle. Riders attend one 75 minute session each day for five consecutive days where they learn to ride while accompanied and encouraged by volunteer spotters. Over the course of the week, the bikes are continually adjusted in an effort to  challenge riders balance as they gradually discover the skill and joy of riding.

The goal of iCan Bike is to teach individuals with disabilities to ride a two wheel bicycle and become lifelong independent riders.  This achievement, in turn, creates a gateway of opportunity, helping each rider gain assurance and self-reliance in many other aspects of their lives.  Parents, teachers and therapists describe the results as miraculous.  Many of the riders have tried for years to learn to ride a bicycle without success.  In just one week of the iCan Bike camp, about 80% of theriders will learn to independently ride a two wheel bike.  The remaining 20% make tremendous strides toward that goal.  Success in learning to ride a bicycle is a major milestone in anyone’s life.  When learning has become a struggle, the accomplishment and its impact can be much greater.  We observe that learning to ride a  bicycle infuses riders with confidence and an improved self-image that has a positive ripple effect into many other aspects of their lives.

2016 iCan Bike Camp

iCan Bike Campers must meet the following requirements:

· be at least 8 years old

· have a disability

· walk without an assistive device (e.g., walker or cane)

The 2016 iCan Bike Camp will be held July 25th - July 29th at Hall High School.  There will be 5 - 75 minute time slots each day (Mon . - Fri.) beginning at 8:30 am.  Riders must attend the same time slot each day.  When registering your child for the camp, please choose multiple time slots that you will be available for.  Riders are slotted into each session based on availability and on the age and size of your child.  Riders must be evenly distributed among the sessions because of the availability of equipment (for example, we can't have 8 children in one session who are all of similar sizes because the equipment being used is of different sizes).  Please be flexible if at all possible.  We will do our best to accomodate your first selections, but may need to slot your child to another session if necessary.

There will be a parent orientation meeting on Sunday July 24th.  We will send details about the meeting prior to that date.  This is a mandatory meeting for at least one parent per rider.

iCan Bike registration forms must be either mailed to the address proivided on the form or you may scan and submit by email if you are paying by charge card.
