Starting July 1, 2019, the Town of West Hartford will offer residents a biweekly way to get rid of yard waste and recyclable items.
“We have noticed an increase in yard waste making its way into the green trash barrels, yard waste is a recyclable material and should be diverted from incineration or landfilling,” said John Phillips, director, Department of Public Works.
“We have had great success with our Spring Yard Waste Collection and felt by offering this service on a biweekly basis, residents will have more opportunity to separate waste properly during the growing months,” said Phillips.
“This is a value added service toward the Town’s effort to properly manage our waste materials,” said Phillips.
The new service begins July 1 and will continue through October 31. In future years, the program will run April 1 through October 31.
Yard waste should be placed in 30-gallon biodegradable leaf bags and placed at the curb on the same day as your recyclables. Brush must be cut to four-foot lengths, tied and bundled.
Soon, residents will have the option to purchase a 96-gallon cart for yard waste. The cart is the equivalent of three, 30-gallon bags.
Also, beginning July 1, recyclables will go back to being collected on a biweekly basis.
“We found that the volume of recyclable items that was collected didn’t justify the cost of the weekly service,” said Matt Hart, Town Manager.
The Town of West Hartford provides curbside collection services to all single-family homes, as well as multi-family buildings that have up to three individual dwelling units. Services include trash, recycling, yard waste and bulky waste collection.
Acceptable items for the blue recycling barrel include aluminum and steel, glass bottles and jars, cereal boxes, newspapers and inserts, magazines and catalogs, junk mail, office paper, paperboard/boxboard, cardboard and paper tubes, note cards and folders, and kitchen, laundry and bath bottles and containers.

Residents who find that their recycling barrel is full by collection day, may bring their recyclable items to the Yard Waste and Recycling Center. An annual residency permit is required.
The Town does not provide a second recycling cart. However, Paine's Recycling & Rubbish Removal, Inc., the Town’ service provider, offers a subscription service. Call Paine’s at 860-844-3000 to learn more.
