New Plastic Film Recycling

New West Hartford Plastic Recycling Campaign

The West Hartford Land Trust and West Hartford Rotary Club are partnering with the Town ‘s Public Works Department to sponsor a new plastic film recycling program. This program will enable residents to recycle plastic items that can’t be accepted for single stream recycling.

The Land Trust and Rotary Club decided to initiate this program because they are concerned about the harmful impact that plastic has on our environment and our food and water supply. While the Connecticut legislature took action last year to limit use of single-use plastic bags, the legislation addresses only a small part of the problem.

Starting in February, collection bins will be placed at four locations in Town, with a goal of collecting and recycling soft plastic that is used by Trex in manufacturing building products. If the Town collects 500 pounds of plastic in a six-month period, Trex will donate a bench at the end of the challenge period. The bench will be placed in a public location in West Hartford.

The chart below shows the types of plastic film and bags that will be collected. They include items like produce and bread bags, ice bags, newspaper sleeves, dry cleaning bags, bubble wrap and case wrap. The plastic collected must be clean and dry.

If the plastic is shiny or makes a crinkly or crunchy sound, it is not acceptable. Items that will NOT be collected include chip bags, animal food bags, pre-washed salad bags and anything that is metallic looking inside.

From February 1 through July 31, 2020, collection bins will be located at:

  • West Hartford Town Hall, 50 South Main Street, Lobby
  • West Hartford Recycling Center, 25 Brixton Road, Office Trailer
  • Elmwood Community Center, 1106 New Britain Avenue
  • Bishops Corner Library, 15 Starkel Road
