June is Dog License Month!

June is dog license month in the State of Connecticut. The West Hartford Town Clerk’s Office has mailed reminders to over 3,000 residents, urging owners to make their dogs “legal.”
According to state law, all dogs over 6 months must be licensed yearly. A numbered tag will accompany the paper license and serve as identification for any pet wandering away from home. The annual fee for dog licenses is $19.00 for unaltered dogs and $8.00 for neutered or spayed dogs.
All dogs must be vaccinated against rabies. If the rabies certificate has expired before renewal, please include an updated certificate from your veterinarian for your dog. A Rabies Vaccination Clinic will be held on June 8,10 a.m. to Noon, at Windsor Firehouse, 50 Pine Lane, Windsor.
If a dog is being licensed for the first time and has been neutered/spayed, a certificate from the vet must be presented. Once processed, all documentation will be returned.
Applications for dog licenses can be mailed to the Office of the Town Clerk, Town of West Hartford, 50 South Main Street, Room 313, West Hartford, CT 06107. Please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope to receive your license, tag, and the return of your supporting documentation. Also, dog licenses can be obtained in person by visiting the Town Clerk’s Office. Please Note: Incomplete applications will be returned.
If your dog is six months or older, state law requires that you obtain a license in the town where you reside. When you apply for your license, you must include the rabies vaccination certificate issued by your veterinarian. The metal tag is not an acceptable proof of vaccination. The certificate will usually indicate whether the dog has been spayed or neutered, but if not, you will need to present a separate certificate issued by your veterinarian.
New dog owners and dog owners who have lost or never received the renewal reminder should submit the Dog License Form along with payment and a self-addressed, stamped envelope and mail to the Town Clerk's Office, 50 South Main Street, Room 313. Please remember to include current rabies vaccination paperwork and if applicable, documentation stating your dog has been spayed or neutered. We will return the license and tag promptly.
If you do not have a printer, you may hand write the required information on a separate piece of paper and mail it, along with payment and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Town Clerk's Office, 50 South Main Street, Room 313. Please remember to include current rabies vaccination paperwork and if applicable, documentation stating your dog has been spayed or neutered. We will return the license and tag promptly.
