Building

A building permit is required for any new building construction, alteration or repair of an existing building, a building addition, temporary building, demolition, or pool installation. A permit is required if you plan to alter a building by cutting a portion of a wall, removing or cutting any structural beam or load bearing support, or change any required means of entering or exiting.  In accordance with the State of Connecticut Basic Building Code and the West Hartford Zoning Ordinance, permits are also required for air conditioning, heating, sprinkler, electric wiring, and plumbing.

The Building Inspection office is open 8:00AM to 4:00 PM. To schedule an inspection during this time frame please call 860-561-7530. Please be advised that you may need to leave a message, however, you will receive a return call within 24 business hours.

Building Inspection staff are available to the general public, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

CityView Permit Portal

Permit applicants are required to use our CityView Permit Online Portal for all submissions. Paper applications will no longer be accepted.

  • Receive real-time inspection results
  • Pay all fees online 

To use all the services and features the online portal offers, you must register and create a user account.  Users can logon and work on the permit over a period of time.  Information is saved after each visit so users can pick-up where they previously left off. Important documents can be uploaded and fees are automatically and correctly calculated. Users complete the transaction with a credit card payment. Once the permit is submitted, users can logon and track its progress. A history of all transactions are kept in the users account.  

A computer kiosk is available in each of the three offices so people can apply for a permit in person.  Staff is happy to assist and answer questions.
