Transportation & Traffic

The Engineering Division conducts traffic counts on streets and intersections and performs traffic studies related to traffic signs, traffic signals, pavement markings, on-street parking, pedestrian and bicycling facilities.

The Town maintains 63 traffic signals. The Engineering Division determines how to safely and efficiently accommodate motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists at each signalized intersection. The Department of Public Works maintains the traffic signal equipment and performs modifications under the direction of the Engineering Division.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation maintains 45 traffic signals in West Hartford, most of which are located on New Britain Avenue and Albany Avenue.

The Town also maintains the pavement markings, crosswalks, lane delineations, speed limit records, and parking facilities on local roads.

Public bus service ( including schedules, routes, and stops) are provided by the Connecticut Department of Transportation through its CTTransit Hartford Division and CTfastrak services.  Bus shelters are maintained by the Town of West Hartford through the Grounds Division of the Department of Public Works and may be contacted at 860-561-8100.

Paratransit is provided by the Greater Hartford Transit District. Dial-a-ride services are coordinated through the Town of West Hartford's Department of Social Services
