As a "Vision Zero Safe Driver," I pledge to...
1. Stay Focused – Avoid Distracted Driving
Why it matters: Even a quick glance away from the road endangers everyone around you.
2. Drive the Speed Limit
Why it matters: Driving faster than the speed limit increases the chances of a serious crash, reduces your reaction time, and narrows your field of vision. The survival rate of a motor vehicle crash with a pedestrian or cyclist drops exponentially when speeds are over 30 mph.
3. Yield to Pedestrians at Crosswalks
Why it matters: It’s not only courteous—it’s the law. Stopping ensures pedestrians can cross safely.
4. Stop at Stop Signs and Red Lights
Why it matters: Stopping allows you to check for other road users and assess the intersection safely. Other drivers expect traffic to come to a stop before proceeding. Rolling through stop signs or running red lights puts everyone at risk.
5. Maintain a safe distance between my car and the one in front of me
Why it matters: "Tailgating" is very dangerous because it increases the likelihood of a crash if the driver in front of you needs to stop suddenly. Also, the driver being tailgated may feel stressed/distracted by the car following too closely.
6. Give Cyclists at least 3 feet of space when passing
Why it matters: State law requires drivers to pass cyclists with care by providing this minimum clearance, which reduces the risk of a vulnerable user crash.
