For most persons who need only one dose of influenza vaccine for the season, vaccination should ideally be offered during September or October. However, vaccination should continue throughout the season as long as influenza viruses are circulating.
Vaccination during July and August is not recommended for most groups. Timing considerations include:
- For most adults (particularly those aged ≥65 years) and pregnant persons in the first or second trimester, vaccination during July and August should be avoided unless there is concern that later vaccination might not be possible.
- Children 6 months through 8 years who require 2 doses (Figure) should receive the first dose as soon as vaccine is available.
- Vaccination during July and August can be considered for children of any age who require only 1 dose.
- Vaccination in July and August can be considered for pregnant persons who are in the third trimester during these months (see also Influenza Vaccination in Pregnancy).

Can I get travel vaccines from the Health District?

WHBHD does not offer travel vaccines. Vaccinate at least a month before you travel.

See your doctor when you start to plan your trip abroad. It’s important to do this well in advance.

Your body needs time to build up immunity.
You may need several weeks to get all the doses of the vaccine.
Your primary doctor may not stock travel vaccines. Visit a travel medical clinic.
You’ll need time to prepare for your pre-travel appointment.
If the country you visit requires a yellow fever vaccine, only a limited number of clinics have the vaccine and will probably be some distance from where you live. You must get it at least 10 days before travel.

Are there any special programs or initiatives for individuals who are uninsured or underinsured to access vaccines?

Your children may be able to get no-cost vaccines through CDC’s Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program at WHBHD health clinic that are enrolled in the VFC Program.

The VFC Program helps all children have a better chance of getting their recommended vaccinations on schedule. Vaccinating on time means healthier children, families, and communities.

Vaccines provided by the VFC Program protect babies, young children, and adolescents from preventable disease.
