A century ago, a Yale University student named Wilton W. (Mike) Sherman bought a 120-acre estate on South Main Street, where he kept a herd cattle and four horses. In 1924, he opened a 14-hole golf course on the farm, and named the course Rockledge, due to the terrain. He enlarged the golf course to 18-holes in 1927, and hosted many tournaments over the next 30 years.
After Mike Sherman passed away in 1959, the Town of West Hartford purchased the clubhouse and 100 acres for $1,225,000 to create the municipal golf course we know today.
