Yes! We have recently launched an online permitting system and we strongly encourage all applications moving forward to be submitted online. 

This information can be obtained by typing the subject address into our online GIS website. 

The "Property Quick Search" bar at the top right can be used to find the specific property in question.

The "Themes" tab on the top right of the map pane will open a right hand panel that allows you to select from several different views including zoning, wetlands, flood.

This information can be obtained by viewing the West Hartford Zoning Ordinances, Chapter 177, Schedules of Permitted Main Uses, and Schedule of Permitted Accessory Uses. Allowed uses are largely dependent on the zone the specific property is located within. 

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) determines flood zone boundaries which are identified on FEMA's Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM). Information on FEMA's FIRM maps is available by visiting FEMA's Flood Map Service website or by visiting the Town's Geographic Information System (GIS) website  select "Flood Zone" from the "Select Map Theme" drop down on the right side of the map.

If your property is in Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHAs), defined as any zone A or V on the flood maps, the purchase of flood insurance is mandatory for all federal or federally related financial assistance for the acquisition and/or construction of buildings and development activity is subject to review under Section 177-8 of the West Hartford Zoning Ordinances. Yes, all new or replacement fencing needs a permit. Please use the permit below. Also, please see fence regulations .

All fencing permits should be submitted online through the public portal and require the filled out application form below and a surveyed plot plan with the fence location marked on. If you don't have a plot plan please reach out to staff as we may have one on file for the property. 

Fencing Permits for required pool protection are through the Building Inspection Division.

The keeping of honeybees in the Town of West Hartford is permissible.  Please see the zoning ordinance concerning honeybee keeping.  A zoning application is required. Check the "Other" box at the top of the form and include a description in your application.   

However, chickens, or any other livestock animals typically found on a farm, are not permitted to be kept, raised, trained or managed on residential properties.

No, these types of vehicles are not allowed to be stored on residential properties.  Only vehicles bearing passenger registration are allowed on the property.  Obtain the schedule of permitted accessory uses. 

Yes. In some circumstances, home-based businesses are permitted. The type of permit needed depends on the nature of the business.  View a summary to determine which permit is most appropriate.  Please also click on the associated links to see full ordinance requirements. 

Home-based businesses that are specifically prohibited include, but are not limited to: Retail sales of any kind, hair and nail salons, insurance brokers. 

Generally, driveways are permitted no closer than two feet from a property line and must not be expanded into an area that is in front of the living area of the home.

A permit through the West Hartford Engineering Division is required for a driveway reconstruction and/or expansion.  See more information on the Engineering web site. The Engineering office can be reached at 860-561-7540.

Yes. A permit is required for any type or size of shed. For a shed 200 square feet or under, please use the permit below. The zoning permit form below is required for these sheds. The permit should be submitted through the online public portal under Zoning Division > Apply for a Zoning Permit > Accessory Structures 200 sf or Under. 

For sheds over 200 square feet a Building Permit is required through the Building Inspection Division. Please contact the West Hartford Building Department at 860-561-7530 or look through our Building Department online resources. Zoning still reviews and zoning requirements still apply to all Building Permits. 

All shed permits will require the shed location to be shown on a surveyed plot plan with dimensions given and measurements to property lines. If you don't have a plot plan please reach out to staff as we may have one on file for the property. 

Each year motor vehicle accidents are attributed to overgrown shrubbery on street corners and intersections. Here is a test to determine if you need to trim back your shrubbery.

Drive up to white line on the road located before the stop sign and look to make sure you can see oncoming traffic and pedestrians without having to roll forward. If you have to roll forward, its time get out your hedge clippers.

For the safety of all, it is important that hedges, bushes, trees or other growth or any fence do not obstruct a clear view of drivers (West Hartford Code: Chapter 177-24).

Enforcement of these ordinances is not intended to burden property owners, but instead to raise awareness of the responsibilities of maintaining your property so West Hartford is a safe and enjoyable community.
