West Hartford's New CityView Permit Portal

We are pleased to offer our citizens, businesses, and visitors access to our new online permitting portal.

Permit applicants will now be required to use our CityView Permit Online Portal for all submissions.

  • Apply for building, zoning, and engineering permits
  • Register as a Contractor
  • Submit land use applications
  • Track project status
  • View permit status
  • Receive real-time inspection results
  • Pay all fees online

To use all the services and features the online portal offers, you must register and create a user account.  Users can log-on and work on the permit over a period of time.  Information is saved after each visit so users can pick-up where they previously left off. Important documents can be uploaded and fees are automatically and correctly calculated. Users complete the transaction with a credit card payment. Once the permit is submitted, users can log-on and track its progress. A history of all transactions are kept in the users account.

A computer kiosk is available in each of the three offices so people can apply for a permit in person.  Staff is happy to assist and answer questions.

Building Lines
Definition of Building Line (Zoning Ordinance, Chapter 177-2): A line on a lot or parcel of land establishing the minimum setback for structures from a street line.  Building line may or may not be coterminous with a street line.  In the case of a rear lot, the building line shall be established parallel to the front lot line.

Building line setbacks are different from rear yard and side yard setbacks in that they are not zone specific.  Rather, building line setbacks differ by street and in many cases, change block-by-block.  To determine what the building line setback is for a given parcel use the PDF portfolio of building lines found at the link above and using our GIS system (see link under next heading below) find your street and follow the references to cross-streets and distances listed on the sheet to find where a given parcel falls.

Zoning, Wetland, and Floodplain maps

Use our online GIS maps to find zones, wetland, and floodplain maps for a property location.  Floodplain information is provided to residents, banks, insurance companies and developers. Maps are also available in the Planning office.
