This program officially starts on Earth Day, April 22nd!

Help West Hartford meet its waste reduction goals!

  1. Download the free MetroKEY app from your app store and register for an account.
  2. Start separating your household food scraps. Unlike backyard composting, this commercial program accepts ALL food including meat, bones, dairy, and spoiled food. Please view the list of acceptable and unacceptable items. BPI certified compostable bags and brown paper bags are okay to use. Please NO plastic bags.
  3. Bring your collected food scraps at your convenience to one of these 4 town drop-off locations. Once there, open your app, click the icon for your current drop-off location, press the pedal to the bottom left of the bin, the lid will then open allowing you to drop in your food scraps!
  • Town Hall, 50 S Main St. (To the right of main entrance)
  • Eisenhower Park, 33 Sheep Hill Drive
  • Norfeldt Field, 1515 Boulevard
  • Yard Waste & Recycling Center, 25 Brixton Rd (you will need permit to enter this location)

What are the benefits of separating food scraps for composting?

  • Reduces household trash. Food scraps are a large part of what people throw away (EPA estimates 23%). Also makes trash less stinky.
  • Reduces greenhouse gases. Diverting food scraps which would otherwise end up in landfills and incinerators, reduces the release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.
  • Saves the town money! Removing food scraps from waste stream reduces fees charged for trash collection. Food scrap disposal costs about 30% less than trash.
  • Creates local jobs and helps the economy. Food scraps are processed locally Quantum Biopower in Southington, CT, providing jobs and other local economic benefits.
  • Creates a useful product. Food scraps processed at Quantum Biopower are turned into a bio-fuel, which creates electricity. It also creates compost.
