Yard Waste & Recycling Center

A permit is required to access the Recycling facility. Permits are for residential use only. Yard waste and clean wood from commercial operations, contractors, or for-hire services are not accepted at the Town’s recycling center. This includes materials generated by permitted residents operating side businesses that regularly produce such waste.

Who can apply for a permit? Applicant must be a resident of West Hartford. The resident’s driver's license and vehicle registration must display a West Hartford address.

Annual permits or day permits can be purchased online with a credit card. The annual permit is valid for the calendar year in which it was purchased.

Applications will be processed within two business days. Annual permits will be mailed via USPS to the residents. Day permits will be sent via email communication.

Permitted residents, with an annual permit, have unlimited access to use the Yard Waste and Recycling Center at no additional charge for recycling opportunities such as mattresses/box springs, e-waste, textiles, yard waste, aggregate waste, single stream recycling, paint, books, cardboard, and metals.

Compost is available for pick-up only at the Recycling Center facility. Quantities are limited to bags and barrels for personal yard use. No trucks or pick-up loads allowed. Compost is typically available at the beginning of April, depending on the weather conditions.

Leaf Vouchers will no longer be accepted at the Recycling Center.

Pricing

There is an annual permit fee to use the transfer facility. Beginning January 1^st 2025 permits will be for the calendar year January 1, through December 31. Holders of older permits will be able to continue using them through the indicated date of March 31, 2025. Once you have a permit, the disposal of mattresses, box springs, paint, cardboard, textiles, and electronics are free.

Books - hard and soft back, textbooks, magazines.
Brush (no greater than 4 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length)
Clean Fill & Concrete Rubble with a 1/2 cu. yd. maximum drop-off
Electronics Recycling: computers, monitors, televisions, VCR’s DVD Players, PDA’s copiers, microwaves, telephones, and anything with a plug and no freone. Items not accepted: smoke detectors, hazardous materials and liquids, humidifiers/dehumidifiers and air conditioners
Household curbside recycling items:
- Plastic: tubs, jugs, bottles and jars (Note, no buckets, laundry baskets, baby pools or other “rigid plastics,” no straws, or plastic lids)
- Glass (lids are allowed, however they must be separated)
- Cardboard
- Paper
- Cans
- Aluminum foil containers
- Food grade aerosol containers

Textiles: MUST be in bags. Clothing and shoe donations including: all clothing, bed sheets, pillows and pillowcases, blankets, comforters, boots, coats, curtains, draperies, flip flops, hats, jackets, purses, shoes, socks, stuffed animals, suits, sweaters, table linens, ties, and undergarments. Worn, torn ripped and stained items are also acceptable.
