Yard Waste & Recycling Center

An annual permit is required to use the Recycling facility. Permits can be purchased online with a credit card.

Permits may also be picked up or purchased in-person with a credit card at Public Works, Wednesday - Friday from 8 AM to 3 PM. Office is closed for lunch from 12 Noon to 1PM. Day permits are available on an exception basis.

The Public Works office will be open four (4) Saturdays from 7 AM to 12 PM for residents to obtain permits. Those dates are September 7, September 21, October 19, and October 26.

If purchased your permit online, please bring your receipt, vehicle registration, and driver’s license. If you purchased the permit in person, please provide your credit card, vehicle registration, and driver’s license.

Permits are for residential use only. Commercial yard waste and clean wood will no longer be accepted at the Town’s recycling center. This includes material from permitted residents with side businesses that generate frequent volumes of yard waste and clean wood material.

Note: A permit will only be issued to town residents whose vehicle is registered in the town of West Hartford. All commercial, rental, or out-of-town vehicles will not get granted a permit.

Permitted residents have unlimited access to use the Yard Waste and Recycling Center at no additional charge for recycling opportunities such as mattresses/box springs, e-waste, textiles, yard waste, aggregate waste, single stream recycling, paint, books, cardboard and metals.

Compost is available for pickup only at the Recycling Center facility. Quantities are limited to bags and barrels for personal yard use. No trucks or pick-up loads allowed. Compost is usually available beginning of April, dependent on weather.

Note: A permit will only be issued to town residents whose vehicle is registered in the town of West Hartford. All commercial, rental or out of town vehicles will not get granted a permit.

The vehicles registration card plus a utility bill matching the address of the vehicle’s registration will need to be presented when picking up your permit.

After submitting the permit application, a confirmation via email will be sent. This is your receipt! Please bring this payment receipt with you so that the attendant can confirm your purchase.

Pricing

There is an annual permit fee to use the facility and is good April 1^st through March 31^st . Once you have a permit, the disposal of mattresses, box springs, paint, cardboard, textiles, and electronics are free.

Books - hard and soft back, textbooks, magazines.
Brush (no greater than 4 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length)
Clean Fill & Concrete Rubble with a 1/2 cu. yd. maximum drop-off
Electronics Recycling: computers, monitors, televisions, VCR’s DVD Players, PDA’s copiers, microwaves, telephones, and anything with a plug and no freone. Items not accepted: smoke detectors, hazardous materials and liquids, humidifiers/dehumidifiers and air conditioners
Household curbside recycling items:
- Plastic: tubs, jugs, bottles and jars (Note, no buckets, laundry baskets, baby pools or other “rigid plastics,” no straws, or plastic lids)
- Glass (lids are allowed, however they must be separated)
- Cardboard
- Paper
- Cans
- Aluminum foil containers
- Food grade aerosol containers

Textiles: MUST be in bags. Clothing and shoe donations including: all clothing, bed sheets, pillow cases, blankets, comforters, boots, coats, curtains, draperies, flip flops, hats, jackets, purses, shoes, socks, stuffed animals, suits, sweaters, table linens, ties, and undergarments. Worn, torn ripped and stained items are also acceptable.
